Antoinette's mom wakes her up before she leaves for work, but Antoinette often goes back to sleep. When she wakes up, it's too late to go to school so she hangs out with her two grown brothers and watches TV. When she does come to school, she daydreams and teachers find it frustrating to have to constantly remind her to pay attention. |

Shy and quiet Jhon was born in the US but speaks Vietnamese at home and is small for his age. He is one of the shortest in his class even though he was held over in third grade. He struggles to make sense of his school work. Jhon is a video game addict and his PlayStation is his best friend. |

Olivia moved last spring from Montana and thinks NYC is "cool". Her favorite singer is Hilary Duff and she has all Hilary's songs on her iPod. Olivia likes school, and students and teachers like her. She participates eagerly in class, building on her classmates' comments: however, her written work is disappointing. |

Mature, graceful, a double-dutch champion, the oldest in a large family with many responsibilities at home, Carmen moves between spoken Spanish and English. She pays attention and participates in class but struggles with her homework. |

Rashawn dreams of a career in the NBA where he won't have to read. Girls find him cute and boys admire him for his basketball prowess. His second grade teacher convinced his mother that Rashawn had too much energy for a regular classroom and he spent most of his elementary years in a self-contained classroom. He is now struggling in a mainstream classroom and receiving counseling as a related service. |
